FRT Just misses out on semis

It was a tough day for Freshie Racing on day 3 of the Asian Match Racing Championships narrowly missing out on a spot in the semi finals. The day started with us against fellow Perth skipper David Gilmour, in the first round robin we manage to beat Dave but unfortuantly not the second time round. After lunch the breeze picked up and we were at the point were we had to beat Maximilian and the Zoke Team skippered by Seah Chin Yew. We managed to beat Maximilian but when we came up to verse the Zoke team a few costly mistakes lead to us losing and also losing a spot in the semis. The team in very disappointed but as Peter said in the media conference "we'll be back next year. Its not the end".

Freshie Racing Team has just completed day 2 of the Asian Match Racing Championships.

It was another hot humid day with interesting sailing here in Kuala Terengganu but the team is confident in their ability to close the gap tomorrow on one of the semi finals positions as we come to the end of the second round robin. Keep posted to see how we go!

Solid start for Freshie Racing at Asian Match Racing Champs.

Freshie Racing Team has arrived in Kuala Terengganu Malaysia for the 2011 Asian Match Racing Championships. Today was the first day of racing for the event and breeze was stronger and more consistent than any day during event last year. The team was off for the first race which gave us some good time to analyse the course. Our first race was against Reuben Corbett (AON RACING). This was a close race until the bottom gate rounding where the team chose tactically to go to the opposite mark to Reuben’s team. Our team lost out but manage to get the ground back by the top mark narrowly missing out at the end. After our first race the team had some great close races (with quite a few penalty’s) with teams such as David Gilmours team and Singapore’s Maximilian Soh (Team Send It Sideways). At the end of race day 1 Freshie Racing Team is at the top of the leader board sharing it with Will Tiller (Full Metal Jacket Racing) both on 4 wins 1 loss each. Freshie Racing and Full Metal Jacket will race off tomorrow morning for the last race of the first round Robin with the winner becoming top of the first Round Robin. Extreme weather conditions in Perth this weekend saw the format of the state match racing champs cut short on the final day with wind gusts up to 35knots. Freshie racing went undefeated in the 1st round robin to take the win.

disappointment for FRT at OM Match Race

Freshie Racing has had a disappointing regatta in Ledro for the OM Match race. The Grade 2 event had many top ranked skippers such as Reuben Corbett and Will Tiller from New Zealand. The team felt confident going into our first race of day 2 against Will Tiller, we managed to catch Tiller out at the top mark stopping him from bearing away and allowed us to gain the lead but just as the first day small complications led to leads being lost.
After the first race the team did not gain enough wins to qualify for semi's and ended in 11th place.

The team has now ended their 2011 Europe Tour winning 2 of our 4 regattas and begin training and planing for next year. Thanks for following the team and keep posted for future news on local events and our next season.

Clean Sweep for FRT first day of Lyon Match Race

After the First day at the Lyon Grand Prix Match Race FRT has had a very successful day winning all of our races in the round robin and also claiming a spot in the finals after winning our semi finals 2/0.
The team which includes part time member Tom Johnson sailed very well today with controlled pre-starts and good consitant legs. The breeze here in Lyon has been coming from a fairly consistant position all day so we have been able to get through most of the program with minimal time spent moving marks. The plan for tomorrow is that 7th to 5th will race in the morning and the top 4 will start racing around midday keep posted to see how we end up.

No luck in Slovenia

Today was a tough day for the Freshie Racing Team after only winning one race in the repacharge.

We felt we sailed well, dominating most of our prestarts and control in the early pieces of the course but the shifty conditions proved to not be on our side. The team is disappointed with their position but already have their eyes on the next regatta in lyon, France which will start in a week.

Tough day in Slovenia for FRT

It was a hard day on the water today for FRT winning 2 out of 7 races. The team had some great prestarts but the constantly shifty conditions proved to be our downfall as we struggled to keep a hold of our competitors.
Tomorrow is a new day and the team is focused on claiming one of the two last remaining semi final positions after Ian Ainslie and Mads Embler took out the the first two spots after getting to the top of the first round robin.

The team is feeling good and ready to take on the hopefully not too shifty conditions of the repacharge to take one of the semi final positions, keep posted to see how we go.

FRT ready for Slovenia Match Cup

After a couple days break the Freshie Racing Team has arrived in Kopa, Slovenia to compete in the Slovenia match cup which is a grade 2 event. The team is feeling confident going into this regatta after our win in Ravenna, Italy last week. Today the team managed to get out and train on the J24s againt fellow competitor Ian Ainslie who is the highest ranked skipper at this event. Racing starts tomorrow with the plan to have a double round robin but with the top two of the first round robin qualifying directly for the semi finals.

Solid start for Freshie Racing at GRADO3 in Italy

FRT went 5 wins from 7 races in tricky conditions on day 1 here in Ravenna, Italy. The boats we are sailing are Platu 25s and are quite light and fast and it took us a few races to get our heads around. We are feeling very confident going into the final day tomorrow.

Tough day for Freshie Racing

Today saw light variable winds from the East in the morning, and the race committee did well to get 2 flights away. We won our first race against Matt Steven through great tactics and wind strategy in Tom Johnson, and narrowly lost in the second race to Tristan Brown with a number of lead changes and 30 degree wind shifts. After a postponement ashore the wind built and steadied to a sea breeze. The team is sailing well together, but we had a number of tactical errors which cost us a few races, we only won 1 race in the afternoon session, against Japanese sailor Yoshida. Spirits on the boat are still high and we are feeling confident for the next round robin. And are looking forward to getting back out on the water tomorrow.

Freshie Racing bows out of Collin Mullins, but confident for Warren Jones

Day 2 of the Collin Mullins and again it was an extremely hot and humid day with a strong North Westerly breeze, due to the cyclone North of Perth. Freshie Racing started the day well with a win against Harry Thurston. Tom, who hasn’t skippered match racing before was ever improving in his prestarts. The wind continued to strengthen and we were ordered to sail with a reefed main and no spinnakers, sailing with no spinnakers in match racing is a totally different game downwind and it took a bit of getting used to on our part, but was a good experience. David Gilmour and Evan Walker continued to dominate the round robins as well as other local skipper Tristan Brown who also had a great day. So at the end of day two all three round robin were completed and the teams in the semi finals were decided. Unfortunately with a slightly less consistent day on the water we missed out on the semi finals, but a feeling very confident coming into the Warren Jones regatta next week and are happy to have an extra days rest with such hot conditions. In the semi final are Gilmour, Walker, Brown and Thurstan.

Solid start for FRT in Collin Mullins Regatta

Racing got underway in a light Southerly breeze in Matilda bay, the race committee did well to get 3 flights away in the fickle conditions, before racing was postponed and all teams retired to the aircon in the club house for lunch. After lunch another 6 flights we completed in a sound sea breeze. We ended the day with 5 wins and 4 losses. Tom Johnson who is skippering the Collin Mullins for Freshie Racing Team did well in tough, hot conditions. We were fairly happy with the results and are looking forward to doing more racing tomorrow.

Disappointment of Freshie Racing Team at AMRC

The race committee was only able to get 2 flights away today dues to very light conditions and strong currents. Unfortunately the results did not go our way today despite winning both of our races we are unable to make the semi finals and will race off for 5th position tomorrow weather permitting.

Tough day for Freshie Racing

Day 2 of the AMRC was a tough one for the team, and we currently sit on 4 win and 7 losses. The team continues to grow stronger but we have had trouble starting in the conditions. We had a confidence booster when we defeated home town rival Dave Gilmour, and have made some changes to improve our prestarts. We are looking forward to day 3 and getting some more results on the board to get into the semi finals.

Day 1 of the AMRC here in Terennganu got off to a slow start with a 1 hour postponement for the seabreeze to build. Once racing got underway we saw a variety of conditions from sunshine to rain and 180 degree wind shifts. The team arrived in Terengganu, Malaysia this morning to 34 degree heat and extreme humidity. Despite the heat we chartered one of the Foundation 36 yachts for a 3 hour training session. The 10 knot sea breeze provided great conditions for training and it proved to be a very constructive as the racing area is situated at the junction of 2 rivers and the currents are very strong so it was helpful to have time to get our heads around the conditions. Racing gets underway tomorrow morning and we are looking forward to some tight racing in great conditions.

Freshie Racing Team prepare for Asian Match Racing Champs

The team is departing Perth tonight to compete in the Asian Match Racing Champs in Terengganu, Malaysia. The event is one of the qualifiers for the prestigious Monsoon Cup and the winner gets a spot in the final event of the World Match racing Tour. Competition will be tough with teams from all over Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Previous winner of the event Kiwi Phil Roberson will be back to defend his title. Freshie Racing has been training hard in Perth with use of the University of Western Australia’s Foundation 36, which has been a great opportunity to sharpen our skills in the same boats we will be racing in Malaysia. Racing gets underway on Monday and we are looking forward to a great event.

Freshie Racing Second in Korea

After only completing 5 races the regatta has been cut short due to the river being to unsafe to sail in. The event is a new initiative in the re-development of Seoul’s water front on the banks of the famous Han River. It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t complete the program but the race committee was unable to let us on the water. New Zealand’s Reuben Corbett and his Black Sheep Racing where the eventual winners with 5 straight wins who have had a fantastic summer and are currently ranked 18^th. We sailed very strong in the big KM36’s and felt confident we would be sailing strong in the finals.

This brings to the conclusion of our summer tour which we have had some very rewarding results and have had some great experiences throughout the world. We would like to thanks all our supporters and followers for the time we have been away. The latest rankings come out this Wednesday where we are hoping we climb further. We are now looking forward to the summer match racing program in Australia and Asia.

Day three of Hahn River International Match Race in Korea

The Freshie Racing Team is currently in Korea competing in the Hahn River International Match Race. In unusual conditions we are currently on flood alert waiting on further news if we are able to head out racing today. The rain hasn’t stopped since we arrived in korea on Wednesday and together with 7 meter tides at sea the current is very very strong.

After competing 9 flights, we are currently in second position behind New Zealand’s Reuben Corbett. In light conditions and challenging current we won 4 out of 5 races. Our race against Corbett was full of drama with him miss-judging the tide and receiving a penalty for a collision. He was able to out sail us on the first up-wind leg before we made up huge ground with more pressure in the left on the final down-wind leg. Corbett however was able to hold us out by 2 boat lengths.

The organising authority has had a tough time dealing with the conditions but has done their best. All other fleets where cancelled yesterday except for the match racing. They were concerned for the safety of the smaller yachts as the current could potentially sweep them away. Hopefully we get to race later today and it stops raining for tomorrow the last day of competition.

Second in Slovenia

The Freshie Racing Team has finished second in the MIPC Match Race Cup 2010 in a tight fought final against Jure Orel from Slovenia. Racing in the beautiful town of Isola in Slovenia the team finished the split round robin with 4 wins and 1 loss in very light conditions. We finished equal 1^st in our group qualifying for the final six.

In the final six stage we raced the top three skippers from the other group. We sailed very strong in good conditions with the wind raining from 10 to 15 knots. We where only defeated by Jure Orel who is ranked 34^th in the world. In a very interesting pre-start we sailed all over Orel who was also given a penalty on the start for failing to avoid. Then we were pushed over the line having to go around the boat with Orel gaining a significant advantage but the umpires agreed not to red flag the incident, for them to do their penalty immediately.

The final was some of the closest racing we have done all European tour against Orel. We came from behind in the final downwind leg to win by half a meter in the first race. The second race we where defeated in a race full of incidents including one large collision. It then came down to the final race, winner taking all. We won the start at the pin end and controlled the first up-wind leg, before we engaged in two large luffs down wind resulting in contact. The umpires green flagged the first incident and then a green flagged second contact at the bottom mark. The last two legs of the race were very close with Orel getting an upper-hand at the top mark and managing to hold us off right to the finish.

The team now heads to Korea to compete in the Han River International in Seoul on Wednesday.

Disappointment in Poland

The final day of the 6^th stage in the Polish Match Tour brought no luck for the team. We had one re-sail to complete against Polish local Szymon Szymik which took 6 hours to get the race completed. Our first race together was abandoned due to the race committees error with the flags, our second race was also abandoned when the wind changed through 50 degrees, before dying to nothing.

Once we were able to race, we had to win to get through to the semis after other results didn’t go our way. After controlling the pre-start and leading off the line we thought we were in an ideal position. Szymik was 2 boat lengths to leeward and got pressure that never came to us. We were never able to close the gap after the top mark and ended the event in 5^th position. The eventual winner was decided on the round robin result with Marek Stańczyk winning both the event and the whole Polish Match Tour. After two tough events over the past 10 days in Poland we now travel to Slovenia to compete in our final European event.

Another exciting new event has come up in only the last week for the Freshie Racing Team. We are now heading to South Korea to compete in the Han River International Match race in Seoul on the 9^th of September. Eight teams have been invited to this event including 4 local Korean teams and 4 internationals, with the Freshie Racing Team representing Australia. This will be a great event on the 5 man KM 36’s which are used in the Korea Match Cup, these boats are similar to the Foundation 36 but with mast head A-symmetricals spinnakers. Our team will be boosted with Nic Brownie and Luke Payne joining us for our final event. The other international teams competing are also very strong with our good friends from Black Sheep Racing representing New Zealand who has had a great European summer winning the grade 1 in Russia and coming second in the Pornichet grade 1.

Freshie Racing have solid day on Polish Match Tour

On the second day of racing in the final stage of the Polish Match Tour in Olsztyn the team finished the on 7 wins and 3 losses with one race to sail in the round robin. This is a great improvement for the team after a disappointing first event last weekend in Poland on the three man Skippy 650’s finishing 8^th. Both days have been miserable with lights winds and lots of rain.

Racing on the small lake in Olsztyn (north east Poland) has been very challenging with constant shifts and massive variations in pressure. We had a strong win in our final race of the day against Przemek Tarnacki ranked 35^th in the world. Yesterday we had 2 disappointing races to much lower ranked competitors but now feel confident going into the final day of racing. The boats have taken a considerable amount of time to get used to with the polish locals very strong in the small lightweight trailer sailors.

Tomorrow there are still 5 flights to be completed with only one re-sail for our team. This could lead to the program being cut short, going straight to the semi’s in which we should qualify. Hopefully the weather improves for our last day of competition in Poland.

Freshie Racing 1st at Danish youth nationals

In testing conditions the team has finished 1^st in the 2010 Danish youth match racing nationals in Middle Fart. The regatta had very testing conditions with very light winds and strong currents. The regatta win is the team’s second of the European tour and the team feels very pleased with this weekend’s result in Denmark.

The regatta finished at the end of the super six stage with light winds cutting the program short once again. We lost one race in the 5 races, were we thought we sailed smart and fast throughout the afternoon. We lost one race to the top finishing Danish team in a contentious umpire decision that cost us the race at the bottom mark. It took 9 hours to get through 5 flights of races so it was very rewarding to finish on top. After last week’s disappointing result in the grade 1 in France the team felt a lot stronger in the grade 3 event and has improved greatly from the experience.

Freshie Racing move to second stage in Denmark

The first day of the Danish Youth Match Racing Nationals began today in Middle Fart, which is a small summer town in south western Denmark. The day was very challenging with a wind range of 0-6 knots and severe current in the afternoon. There are 12 teams competing in the event with all teams being split into two groups.

The team continued there bad starts to regattas this European summer losing the opening flight to the Swedish team. We then went on to win our next four races in a row to move through to the next stage competing against the top 6. The boats we are racing are Match Race 28's which are very heavy and slow.

The afternoon races where very slow with many delays due to lack of wind. The current also played a huge role in the light conditions. The team felt very strong in the afternoon and is hoping for another solid performance tomorrow.

Freshie Racing Head to Denmark

After competing in the French grade 1 last week in Pornichet against some of the best in the world, the Freshie Racing Team now head to Middle Fart in Denmark for the under 23 nationals. Even though the team was disappointed with the result in France there are many positives that can be taken away from competing in the grade 1. The team now knows the areas of our racing in which we can improve both on and off the water to reach the next level of our sport.

We also have a new trimmer for the event in James Williamson from Wakka Racing who has vast experience crewing for Phil Robertson and Swedish match racing legend Magnus Hulmburg. Denmark has many strong teams ranked in the top 100 which will make for a challenging grade 3. The team has had a relaxing week in Paris and is ready to start racing again.

Day 1 of Internationaux de France de match-racing

The Freshie Racing Team began their first grade 1 event in the summer town of Pornichet today. It was a tough day on the water for the team coming up against Mathieu Richard the current leader of the world match racing tour in the first flight. With the team completing 5 races there are many positives that can be taken away. The team sailed well throughout the day with many close races improving on all areas of the game.

The young New Zealand team of Black Sheep Racing and Reuben Corbett are on top with 6 wins followed by Richard and Presti. The day started off light before strengthening to above 20knts in the afternoon making for good runs on the J80’s.

Winning 3 out 5 pre-starts and leading around the top mark it was a different game for us as it is our first event using A-symmetrical in match racing. Tomorrow we have 6 more races left of the round robin with plenty of winnable races. The forecast is for more wind tomorrow and the team is hoping for some good results.

Second in Ireland

After an action packed final day with many close races and plenty of penalty’s thrown around the team only finished with 2 losses to finish second. Only going down in a very close race to the French team and losing the opening race against the local Andy Fowler. Another top result was beating Black Swan racing with Kieth Swinton and his Wakka racing crew.

This is our third podium finish in consecutive events of our European tour. The team is full of confidence as we head to France next week for the grade one event. This is a great opportunity to race against the best in the world including current leader of the world match racing tour Mathieu Richard.

An interesting feature to this regatta is the GPS tracking which each race been uploaded on TackTracker where you can re-watch all the weekends racing.

Solid Start in Ireland

After a tough day on the water the team finished on 3 wins and 1 loss in variable conditions racing from the Royal St George Yacht Club. The racing was very close between the 6 international teams and the 6 local Irish teams. The team has been improving race by race on the J80 yachts and is full of confidence going into the second day. Every team has had at least one loss so it’s important we have a solid round robin has the forecast tomorrow is for another very light day.

The team also has some other exciting news with being granted the final entry spot to the grade 1 event next week in France. The next event for the European tour is the grade 3 at the Royal St George Yacht Club in Ireland. The event is made up of 6 Irish teams and 6 international teams. The team is looking forward to getting back into boats after attending match cup Sweden last week. The team is made up of Peter Nicholas, Travis Keay, Jay Halligan and Tom Bentham. Tom normally sails with Ruben Corbett on the New Zealand team and will boost the experience level on the boat.

The team is full of confidence going into the event after winning the Trapani Match Race in Sicily and is excited to jump onto the J80 yachts. It is also added benefit we get to come up against another Perth local in Keith Swinton who is currently ranked 18^th. With the latest rankings been published yesterday the Freshie Racing Team team has moved up to 74^th which will greatly help in the future to qualify for higher grade events.

Freshie Racing at Match Cup Sweden

The team has had a very busy week in Marstrand at the 2010 Stena Match Cup Sweden working as boat mechanics on the DS37 and Elliot 6 metre yachts as well as watching lots of sailing. The event has showcased the worlds best sailor and especially with the three Western Australian teams competing in Peter Gilmour, Keith Swinton and Torvar Mirsky.

After the teams win in Trapani last week it has been very benificial to watch the top world match racers and analyse the level we need to get to and areas wich we can improve our racing. Our next event is the Royal Saint George Yacht Club Invitational Match Race in Ireland on the 24th and 25th of july.

Freshie Racing wins Trapani Match Race

In the second event of the teams European tour the Freshie Racing team finished on top in the Grade 3 Trapani Match Race 2010. After a hard fort round robin in beautiful conditions the team had a near perfect round robin with 8 wins and 1 loss. After losing the first race to Team Russsia, Peter Nicholas and his team of Travis Keay, Jay Halligan and Daniel Miller regrouped to win 8 races straight.

The team faced tough opposition on day 2 defeating the New Zealand team skippered by Laurie Jury and the team from Great Brittan Robbie Allan, both ranked a lot higher than the Freshie Racing Team. The event was cut short due to time constraints with no semi’s or finals being raced which handed the victory to the team after a very consistent performance throughout the regatta.

The first day of the Trapani Match Race started in beautiful Sicily today in top match racing conditions. The team had a very successful day with 4 wins and 1 loss. The conditions where lovely with 15 to 20 knots and perfect sunshine.

The Freshie Racing Team had some solid performances and continues to develop as a strong team. After losing the first match to the Russian match team the team regrouped to win their next 4 matches against some quality opposition. The Zip 25 yachts where relatively easy to handle being a heavy match racing boat.

Freshie Racing Third in Estonia

Racing in the summer capital of Estonia Parnu in the Estonia open match the freshie racing team ended up 3^rd. The regatta was very interesting with tight racing on the blue sail 24’s. The team had a solid last day winning every race expect one race to the Finland favourite. With no semi finals been raced due to time constraints we were left to fight it out in the petite final against the local favourite Marti Sepp

The petite final was close with Freshie Racing controlling the pre start to hold the Estonian team over the line, giving a significant margin to Nicholas and his team. There was large separation on the upwind where the local gained ground. By controlling tacking duel and keeping phase Freshie racing managed to hold off Sepp and secure 3^rd position.

The eventual winner was Olli Pekker the 31^st ranked finish team who dominated the regatta winning every race in the round robin.

Freshie Racing make sound start in Estonia

The first day of the grade 3 Estonian Open Match Race started today in the city of Parnu . With 3 wins from 5 races with the possibility of a re-sail tomorrow the team is in strong position to make the semi finals. Sailing strong through out the day the team has had lots of positives going into tomorrow with 4 races and finals to go.

The weather conditions where challenging with strong rain and severe wind shifts throughout the day. The racing has been very tight and the team is getting used to the Blue Sail 24’s which are fast and very responsive. The forecast for tomorrow is simular so it will be another challenging day on the water.

Freshie Racing set for big summer in Europe

The Freshie Racing Team made up of Peter Nicholas, Travis Keay, Jay Halligan and Luke Payne are embarking on a match racing tour of Europe. This is a great opportunity for them all to try and reach the top level of world match racing. The team is supported by Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, Zhik and the Ron Tough Yachting Foundation. This is the first team from the yacht clubs youth squad to head to Europe after the squad had impressive results over the Australian summer.

The Freshie racing team had a great summer also with a 2^nd in Collin Mullins and 4^Th in the Warren Jones regattas. The most recent event was the state match racing championships where they finished 2^nd behind Team Gilmour. With the recent ISAF rankings being released last month puts the team in the top 100 in the world. The first event that the team is competing in is the Estonian Open Match Race, which begins next weekend in Parnu.

Freshie racing second at WA match racing states

The 2010 WA Sates Match Racing Championships where held on the weekend at Royal Perth yacht club in the clubs BW8’s. After dominating the double round robin with a scorecard of 9-1, the team felt they sailed well through out the entire regatta in tough conditions at Royal Perth Yacht Club.

The finals where extremely close ending with David Gilmore taking it out. The final was very tight finishing 2-1 in favour of Team Gilmore. The two Royal Freshwater bay teams put a lot of training into this regatta that certainly showed throughout the weekend.

Freshie Racing Teams next event is the grade 3 Estonian Open Match Cup, in Parnu on the 19^th of June, followed by the Trapani Match Race in Sicily

Walker and Junior on top after day 2 of the 2010 Hardy Cup

With a similar start to the day as yesterday in Sydney, the teams were held on shore at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron while racing was postponed for the wind to build; eventually a light sea breeze came in and racing got underway, in an 8 knot North Easterly.

Freshie racing team had a mixture of results to finish the first round robin on 4 wins and 5 losses, while other Youth Squad sailor David Gilmour finished the round on 2 wins.

Evan Walker from the CYCA and Josh Junior from Wellington are out in front with 9 wins each.

The second round robin was started and Gilmour was on fire winning his first 3 races, and Freshie Racing had 1 win and 1 loss.

With more rain forecast for tomorrow, we may be in for another light grey day on Sydney Harbour.

Sound start for Freshie Racing Team at Hardy Cup

A grey start to the day in Sydney, with overcast skies and light shifty winds, saw a short delay before racing got underway on Sydney Harbour. Freshie Racing Team had slow start to the round robin, being rostered off for the first five flights, but came out firing to win out first two races against the USA woman’s team and local hero David Chapman.

A light 6 – 8 knot North East breeze helped the PRO to get through 11 flights, a fair chunk of the first round robin. Again the kiwi teams showed their strength in the Elliott 6 metres, with William Tiller, Josh Junior and Adrian Short dominating the round so far, as well as other Sydney locals Evan Walker and Will Mackenzie. Freshie Racing finished the day with 2 wins and 3 losses and have 4 more races to complete the round robin.

Freshie Racing Team prepares for 2010 Hardy Cup

After a successful Collin Mullins and Warren Jones campaign with a second and forth respectively, Freshie Racing Team have made the trip to Sydney to compete in the prestigious youth match racing event the Hardy Cup at Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. The team of Pete Nicholas, Nick Brownie and Jay Halligan will be working hard to overcome the differences between the Foundation 36 yachts used in Perth and the small Elliott 6 metre yachts used on Sydney Harbour.

The team is looking forward to the tough competition and close racing and after meeting with Sir James himself at the welcome ceremony are looking for

ward to getting out on the water.

Freshie Racing Into Semis After Day 2 of Warren Jones

Another successful day for Freshie Racing in testing conditions on freshwater bay. The team did enough to secure a place in the semi finals after finishing second in last weeks Collin Mullins youth regatta. The conditions have been extremely windy all week and are forecast to be simular tomorrow.

The other teams to qualify for the semis are Gilmore, last years winner Phil Robertson and William Tiller who finished 1^st after the round robin stage. It will be interesting to see who tiller chooses after Freshie racings epic 6 race semi final in last weeks regatta

Freshie Racing Claim Second at Collin Mullins

It took six races for Freshie racing team to secure their spot in the grand final after defeating William Tiller in the semis. The condition where extremely taxing especially on the foundation 36 yachts which came off second best in some occasions.

The finals where raced in conditions which at times hit 40 knots. Mirsky Racing Teams, Kyle Langford sailed a perfect 3 races in the final and only lost two races for the whole regatta. For Langford, who normally sails as tactician for world number two skipper Torvar Mirsky, this was his first international match racing event as skipper.

Commenting on the finals, Peter Nicholas of the host club and skipper of Freshie Racing said of the weather conditions, 'it was marginal out there, we were on the edge all the time, sometimes out of control' having survived winds in the 30 to 40 knot range, but done it with style.

The Collin Mullins has been an ideal lead up for the Freshie racing team as the head into the Warren Jones, which starts on the 1st of February and is being raced out of Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in Perth. The team raced the most races over the regatta and will compete alongside training partner in David Gilmore and Tristan Brown.

Freshie Racing into semies after day 2 of competition

Another successful day for Freshie Racing in testing conditions on freshwater bay. After the completion of the round robin only 1 point separated 1^st to 4^th with Freshie racing ending in 4^th. Enough for the team to qualify for the Warren Jones regatta and secure a place in the semi finals.

The day started in a tough easterly where Freshie racing managed to only loose one race to Kyle Langford who secured first place in the round robin. The typical sea breeze change happened around 12 and continued to strengthen through out the day.

William tiller choose to race against Freshie racing in the semi finals. The first race was close the whole way with many luffs and protest calls. In the end Freshie racing secured a penalty on the final down wind to secure the victory. The second and final race of the day was very simular to the first and a battle the whole way to the finish with Tiller inflicting a penalty on Team Freshie on the last upwind after a tactical error.

This leaves the semis at one win each in first to three series. In the other semi final Langford is two wins up against Gilmore who is also representing royal freshwater bay yacht club.

The opening day of the 2010 Colin Mullins International Youth Regatta at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, saw the Freshie Racing Team take 3 victories from 4 races. This is the lead up-event to the Warren Jones International Youth Regatta - an official World Tour Qualifier Event.

Leading the scoreboard after the first day is three teams, all of which are in the running for the overall tour victory. Gilmore, Langford and tiller lead at the end of racing today, although all having raced more races than Freshie Racing Team.

Tomorrow will be a decisive day as the first round robin is concluded, and it will become clearer who has qualified for the Warren Jones International Youth Regatta with seven team going through.

Harken International Youth: Kiwis Dominate Round Robin, Freshie Racing just misses semis

Day 3 saw the completion of the second round robin in light Westerly winds, after 2 hours of

postponement due to variable winds. Freshie Racing Team sailed excellently to win a tight race

against experienced Kiwi match racer William Tiller in a nail biting finish. They also had another tight

race against Matt Steven from Wellington, where the lead changed a number of times, with Freshie

racing in front at the bottom mark Stevens sailed well to gain control on the right-hand side and won

by a narrow margin.

Jordan Reese also had one more race to complete the second round, he defeated Harry Thurston,

leaving him on 8 wins and 6 losses, the same score card at Freshie Racing, meaning Reese advances

onto the semi finals.

“ It was a disappointing result for Freshie Racing, but we feel we have learnt a lot and improved

throughout the event.” Skipper Pete Nicholas

In the afternoon there was a sail off from positions 5 to 8, Freshie Racing Team had already

cemented the spot in 5th, but sailed well to win two of their three races.

Tomorrow will be the semi final and finals.

“Tiller drops tiller”, Report from day two at Harken Youth Regatta

Day 2 and round 2 of the Harken saw Freshy Racing team having a solid follow up to Day 1’s effort,

with round 2’s score sitting at 3 wins 2 losses, with 2 more races to complete. Racing came to an

early finish as racing was interrupted by lightening and 30 knot winds.

Day 1’s performance by Tiller was not followed up, with his round 2 score sitting at only 2 wins and 4

losses, however this will be enough to secure him and his team a position in the final 4. Strong follow

up performances by Harry Thurston with and Matthew Stevens will see them through to the semi

finals.

After a good days sailing by Jordan Reece, with 5 wins 1 loss, the battle for the 4th and final place in

the final falls between Reece and Freshy Racing, with the two teams sitting on equal points, with

Reece in the lead on count back.

Round 2 will be completed tomorrow morning, with the semi’s starting later in the day.

Harken International Youth: Sound start for Freshie Racing Team

With a 4-3 score card after the first round robin, Freshie Racing are off to a sound start at the 2009

Harken International Youth, at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, in Newport Sydney, but must sail

consistently in the next round to cement a spot in the semi finals.

The crew of Pete Nicholas, Nick Brownie, Tom Lovelady and Nadia Punselie sailed well in this

morning’s light winds, winning their first three races, but as the wind increased the team struggled a

little bit with a 1-3 record after lunch.

William Tiller and his team from RNZYS are 7-0 after the round robin and have done well in the

heavy Forces 24 yachts.

The race committee have done a good job in getting through a full round robin on the first day in

this double round robin format, with 8 teams and 3 more days sailing.

Joining the line up is RPAYC youth sailors Jason Waterhouse and Michael McCormick who earlier this

year won the ISAF youth worlds Hobie division.
